In the autumn, 20 representatives from 15 firms took part in a Trade Mission to promote the UK bioenergy industry in Spain. The growing Spanish market could present tremendous
opportunities for UK companies able to provide developmental and technological skills currently not available there. Godfrey Bevan, DTI Director of Energy Technologies, led the Mission, which included workshops
in Madrid and Seville. The DTI's Infrastructure and Energy Projects Directorate provided support, while the British Embassy in Spain and the Spanish energy agencies IDAE and SODEAN helped with developing and organising the programme.
Over 150 people attended the Madrid workshop. Keynote presentations by IDAE and Godfrey Bevan were followed by industry presentations and a chance for UK and Spanish companies to
hold one-to-one meetings. In Seville, an audience of around 70 heard presentations on UK capabilities. The Mission delegates also visited an innovative development company on the
outskirts of Madrid and an olive oil extraction unit in Granada, where a range of residues are available as fuel for CHP. The industry, with SODEAN and EU funding, is seeking to harness these residues as an energy source.
To be successful in Spain, UK companies will need to establish strong working relationships with local firms. The First International BioEnergy Exhibition and Conference, in Seville in June, could
offer a major opportunity for UK organisations to present themselves to Spanish and international audiences. Companies interested in taking part should contact: Dr Barry Holmes, DTI Trade
