Inquiry Forms Helpline

The Role of the Branch

The Construction Market Intelligence branch (CMI) is responsible for the collection of construction data and statistics in DTI and has been operating since 1958 when it began to collect information from companies connected with the construction industry.

We now collect data through means of regular sampling across a wide range of firms, large and small.

As the construction industry accounts for a large percentage of the country's Gross Domestic Product, it is a good indicator on the health of the economy in general.

The information CMI collect is used in monthly inflation figures and so it is important that the data is as accurate as possible. A 1% error in the figures could produce a 0.01% error in inflation.

Must You Return the Form?

If you receive an Inquiry from us then you must complete and return the form within the specified dates.  This is a legal requirement under Section 1 of the Statistics and Trade Act, 1947. Failure to respond to this compulsory inquiry is an offence for which penalties may be imposed under section 4 of the Act.

If you think that the Inquiry you have received does not apply to your business then either check the link below or telephone our freephone helpline on 0800 373317, email: cmidc@dti.gov.uk
