Heating Systems Toolkit. (URN 00/1199)

DTI, in partnership with the Home Office Fire Safety Community Service, have produced a resource pack entitled ‘Heat the Home Safely’ - launched in October 2000 - which looks specifically at the three key risk areas: heating systems and the hazards of carbon monoxide; space heaters (which include coal and gas open fires, portable gas heaters, paraffin heaters and electric heaters); and electric blankets.

Each section gives an outline of the specific risks involved and who is most at risk, followed by advice on the danger signs to watch out for, and good practice guidelines on how to use heating appliances safely. The good practice sections also include advice on how to raise awareness of the dangers.

The information in this pack is designed to help local government and other organisations provide the public with guidance on how to avoid accidents in the home caused by heating systems.

The pack also contains useful information in the form of leaflets produced by the DTI, DTLR, the Home Office and the Health and Safety Executive, and a list of contact numbers and addresses for other relevant organisations.

Copies of the pack can be obtained free from the DTI Publications Orderline at:
