Welcome to the virtual memorial of the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)Click here to go straight to lists of names for WW1 and WW2. Read on for the story of our War Memorials Project. Many civil servants have, in times of war, given distinguished service to their country – some on active service in the forces, others in vital work at home. This website is dedicated to the memory of over 300 staff from the DTI’s predecessor departments who were killed in action or died in war. By recording their names here, together with personal details and photographs, we aim to keep alive the memory of the sacrifice. The project is unfinished, and we hope that visitors to this site will contribute more information about staff who fell in any conflicts, particularly in the Second World War.
The new war memorial plaque, unveiled in DTI's headquarters at 1 Victoria Street, London SW1, on 11 November 2002, is a replacement for a Roll of Honour to staff of the Board of Trade who fell in the First World War. (The original has been missing for many years. A photograph of it has, however, survived and is reproduced on the top left-hand side of each page of this website.) The story of the missing memorial is told on the WW1 Project page. This site is intended to supplement the new
memorial, by displaying individual stories and photographs, and by
stimulating other researchers to contribute additional information,
particularly about any staff who fell in the Second World War, for which
we have no authoritative list of Board of Trade staff who died. And while we do have official lists for 1914-1919, we have in most
cases researched only very basic details about each man, so there is
scope for others to find out more, particularly from the newly released
Army Service Records at the Public Record Office. You can click on
the links beside the poppy icons at the top of this page to see the results
of the research which has been done so far. If you have relevant information to contribute (for example, if you are a relative or former colleague of a member of staff who died in either war) or if you propose to consult the public records to look in more depth at any of the individuals listed on the website, please contact the DTI War Memorials Project by post or email. We have also included some brief Guidance and Links to further advice on how to start this kind of research. We are particularly keen to receive photographs (for example of individuals, graves and memorials mentioned on this site) and any other relevant material which will help us to tell the individual stories. We would also like to know the whereabouts of any other war memorials listing staff from DTI's predecessor departments. We propose to update the website with additional information as we receive it. Acknowledgements
Many people have contributed to the DTI War Memorials
Project and we are grateful to every one of them.
Our particular thanks go to those relatives of staff who died with
whom we have managed to make contact and who have very generously provided
photographs and other material and given permission to publish them. We are also grateful to several retired staff, who have
contributed valuable information about casualties in WW2, and to a number
of people¾present
and former staff, members of the Western Front Association and the Gallipoli
Association and others¾who
have taken the trouble to locate and photograph graves and memorials
specifically for this website. Copyright and disclaimer
