EQUALITY
AND DIVERSITY - THE WAY AHEAD
The Towards
Equality and Diversity consultation in spring 2002 contained the
Government's proposals for taking forward the implementation of
new anti-discrimination law under the Employment and Race
Directives.
The Directives will tackle discrimination in employment and
training on the grounds of sexual orientation and religion (by
December 2003) and age (by December 2006). There will also be
small, technical changes to existing law on race and disability.
We intend to make equality legislation as coherent and easy to use
as possible. We have produced draft regulations to achieve these
changes (except for age, which will have separate legislation) and are asking for comments on our proposals.
We also intend to have the Equal Pay Act provisions, which
resulted from Towards Equal Pay for Women, in place in 2003.
In addition,
we are committed to getting the right framework to support
equality legislation. We are, therefore, also publishing a
separate consultation paper - Equality and Diversity: Making it
Happen.
Making it
Happen considers the contribution of equality institutions to
making equal opportunities a reality and to promoting equality and
diversity across society and sets out a range of options for
future structures for these institutions, including a single
equality commission.
