The Low Pay Commission (LPC) was established as a result of the National Minimum Wage Act 1998 to advise the Government about the National Minimum Wage.

Minimum Wage Rates

National Minimum Wage rates are currently £4.50 per hour for those aged 22 and over (the adult rate) and £3.80 per hour for those aged 18 - 21 (the Development Rate). The Development Rate can also apply to workers aged 22 and over during the first six months in a new job with a new employer who are receiving accredited training. These rates increased from 1 October 2003.

The Government has accepted the Commission's recommendation that subject to confirmation in early 2004 - there should be further increases to £4.85 and £4.10 from 1 October 2004.
