Weights and Measurers

Transactions in goods by weight or measure and the measuring instruments used in those transactions are in most cases regulated by the Weights and Measures Act 1985 and its secondary legislation.

CCP Directorate is responsible for those provisions aimed at either (i) protecting the consumer against being sold shortweight; and (ii) providing consumers with information about the weight or volume of goods before they commit themselves to a purchase.

DTI's National Weights and Measures Laboratory is responsible for the provisions of the Act relating to measuring equipment and definitions of units of measurement. Please contact NWML for further information – http://www.nwml.gov.uk/

Packaged Goods

Consumer concerns about products offered for sale in packages, particularly where:

  •       the amount of packaging appears to be excessive relative to the weight or volume of product contained in the package: and

  •       the weight or volume of product has been reduced without any corresponding reduction in the amount of packaging.

Metrication

Metric units of measurement are now used for most transactions in goods by weight or measure. In addition, it is Government policy to encourage the use of the metric system for other purposes, including for public administration.

Please Click here to visit out main Metrication page for further information about metrication in the UK, including the Metric Helpline, the DTI report on the adoption of the metric system and DTI guidance notes on the use of metric units in public administration and business.
