British Geological Survey (BGS) Minerals Programme

Brief description:

The BGS Minerals Programme contains two key elements:

  • Minerals Information and Advisory Service - drawing heavily on DTI-supported databases, BGS provides information and advice to government and industry on minerals extraction and usage, and related issues. The information assists in the determination of government and corporate policy, and mineral resource management, including decisions related to the balance between the need to develop natural resources and the protection of the environment;

  • promotion and enhancement of mineral wealth - aimed at stimulating private sector investment in the optimal development and use of Britain's mineral resources, and the transfer to industry of related enabling technology (especially IT). This is achieved through the publication of reports, brochures and guides that give information on opportunities for the discovery of economic deposits and preferred exploration methods for use in Britain. Details of these are available on the Minerals in Britain web-site set up by the Programme. Many can be downloaded free of charge, including a completely revised 2nd edition of 'Exploration for metalliferous and related minerals in Britain: a guide.' Other products are also available at low cost either in hard-copy format or downloaded in digital form from the BGS sales web-site. Extensive holdings of digital geochemical and geophysical data for many prospective areas are also available in BGS databases and can be supplied in a wide range of customer-specified formats.

Eligibility criteria:

Any firm may apply, but it would be of particular interest to SMEs in the UK minerals sector.
