The Gas Appliances Directive
90/396/EEC implemented as the Gas Appliances (Safety) Regulations
1995 SI 1995 No 1629

Subject Area |
The Directive applies to domestic and commercial gas appliances
used for cooking, heating, hot water production, refrigeration,
lighting or washing (with no limit on power) excluding appliances
which have a normal operating temperature above 105oC.
Appliances for use in industrial processes on industrial premises
are specifically excluded.

Intention of
Legislation |
To remove technical certification
barriers to trade and establish a single market in safe gas appliances
throughout the Union.

Implementing
Legislation |
The Gas
Appliances (Safety) Regulations 1995 which reflect the changes
introduced by the CE Marking Directive (93/68/EEC).

Enforcement |
The Regulations are enforced by
the local authority trading standards departments, primarily
in respect of gas appliances intended for use by the consumer,
and by the Health and Safety Executive in respect for equipment
intended for the workplace.

Current Position |
The Directive came fully into
force on 1 January 1996.

Guidance |
A comprehensive DTI guidance booklet is available. This is in
the process of being revised and should be available later this
year.
