The Rt. Hon. Jacqui Smith MP joined the Department for Trade and Industry ministerial team in June 2003 from the Department of Health where she was Minister of State for Health from June 2001.
This is her third ministerial appointment. Between 1999-2001 she was the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department of Education and Employment. Before taking up ministerial office, she was a member of the Treasury Select Committee (1998-99).
Jacqui Smith was elected to Parliament in 1997 as MP for Redditch in the West Midlands, but started political office as a local councillor for Redditch Borough Council (1991-97) where she was active in economic development.
She taught economics and business studies from 1986-1997.
Educated at Dyson Perrins Church of England High School in Malvern, Ms Smith went on to read philosophy, politics and economics at Hertford College, Oxford (1984). She then trained as a teacher with Worcester College of Higher Education where she gained her PGCE (1986).
Jacqui Smith is a keen supporter of Aston Villa Football Club while her other interests include a young family, industry and education training.
