Nigel Griffiths MP
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Construction, Small Business and Enterprise

Nigel Griffiths MP Responsible for the Construction Industry, Small Business Service, Social Enterprise, Export Control and Non-proliferation,  Consumer Goods and Services, GM Foods, and the Trawlermen's compensation scheme. Supports Stephen Timms on Energy and Sustainable Development.

Nigel Griffiths was appointed Minister for Small Business on Monday 11 June 2001.

Minister for Competition and Consumer Affairs for the Department of Trade and Industry between May 1997 and July 1998. Was responsible during this time for establishing the new Competition Commission.

An honours graduate of Edinburgh University, Mr Griffiths is MP for Edinburgh South. He was educated at Hawick High School, Edinburgh University and Morah House College of Education. He married in 1979.

Has been a member of the Public Accounts Committee; chaired the European Council of Consumer Ministers in 1998.

Chaired the Housing Committee of the Edinburgh City Council and set up the Western Hailes Citizens Advice Bureau in the 1980s. Helped found the Big Issue in Scotland and Scottish Education and Action for Development [SEAD] - an organisation that pioneered fair trade with workers in the Third World.

Longstanding member of Friends of the Earth and Amnesty International; patron and adviser to the mentoring organisation Big Brothers and Sisters. This group helps young people of single parent families by supplying volunteers to help with their recreational and educational pursuits.
