Overview

Broadly defined, the electrotechnical sector covers the complete spectrum of electrical, electronic and mechanical industries from capital power equipment to wiring accessories. It also touches on many other sectors within what is traditionally thought of as 'Materials and Engineering'. It had a turnover in the UK in 1999 in the region of £93 billion over 40% of which is exported.

The manufacture of mechanical machinery and equipment generated a turnover of nearly £32 billion in 1999, around one third of which was exported.

Process Engineering Contractors cover all aspects (including design) required for the complete execution of onshore projects for the processing industries including chemicals, oil & gas, electricity generation and food & drink. The UK has the second largest concentration of process industry contracting capability in the world. The industry's annual turnover is estimated to be about £14bn and exports account for around 50% of total business.

The majority of this information was compiled from details supplied by the DTI.

Schemes and Initiatives

Supporting the Power Equipment Industries

The Materials and Engineering Sector Unit (MESU) of the DTI's Business Relations aims to be the trusted Partner for companies, organisations and individuals who are seeking to pioneer change and drive up productivity across engineering in the context of sustainable development.

Within the MESU, a small team is working with the power generation equipment and the electrical transmission & distribution equipment sectors.  Recent work of the team includes:-

  • Completion of a database of the supply chain in the fossil fuel power equipment sector which has been undertaken by Mott MacDonald on behalf of the Department.  The database includes contact details of some 6000 companies for interest to potential customers and potential commercial collaborators.  The database is available free of charge from the DTI.
  • Completion of an impact assessment of e-commerce on the power generation equipment sector.  This has been commissioned from Atmaana Ltd (previously Anisa Consulting Ltd) and a copy of the full assessment is available free of charge from the DTI.  An impact assessment of e-commerce on the electrical transmission and distribution equipment sector is being planned.
  • Completion of studies which explore the key factors affecting the productivity and competitiveness of the sectors.  Copies of these studies are available free of charge from the DTI.
