Competitive, modern markets
Natural Resources, Utilities and Broadcasting Regulation
A key DTI objective is to promote the economic development of UK energy resources and
ensure that the nation's energy needs are met cost-effectively. The Government believes
that through liberalised competitive markets energy consumers will receive the most
benefit, in terms of low prices and better services, and that companies are encouraged to
innovate and seek greater efficiency. In recent years, DTI has overseen the transition in
UK energy markets from state-owned monopolies in most areas to liberalised and competitive
markets. This process is now well under way.
DTI also works for liberalisation and the development of competition in energy markets
in the European Union and elsewhere, to increase choice for consumers and efficiency
within the markets themselves, and to enhance opportunities for UK energy industries.
