- The Welsh Assembly Government is responsible for
agriculture, fisheries, food, forestry and rural affairs
in Wales.
- Joint responsibility for agriculture, fisheries,
food, forestry and rural policy within the UK rests
with:

(DARDNI)
Department of Environment,
Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
Scottish
Executive Environment & Rural Affairs Department
(SEERAD)
Welsh Assembly Government Agriculture & Rural
Affairs Department (ARAD)
- Advice and support on forestry matters is provided
by the Forestry
Commission. The Head of the Forestry Commission
in Wales is Simon Hewitt.
- Advice on Genetically Modified (GM) Crops matters
rest with Countryside Division, which is part of the
Transport, Planning and Environment Group, within
the Welsh Assembly Government.
Objectives

- The main objective of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs
Department is to promote a thriving rural economy, which
is modern and broad based.
- The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to developing
income and employment in rural areas; helping farming
to adapt; supporting those who have suffered as a result
of Foot
and Mouth Disease; and helping the land based economy.
- A wide range of programmes and initiatives have been
put in place to achieve this, including The Plan for Wales
and the National Economic Development Strategy - A
Winning Wales.
- The Welsh Assembly Government is in consultation with
a wide-range of groups & individuals from Wales, all
of whom are committed to promoting and advancing the rural
economy, including the Farming
Futures Group.
