Radioactive Substances:
Proposed Natural Gas Exemption Order

Responses

The consultation described below has now closed, and an analysis of the responses received, has now been published as follows:

Introduction

The Government is inviting comments from industry, interested parties and members of the public on proposals to introduce a new exemption order to exempt from regulation under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 natural gas and natural gas products which contain small amounts of naturally occurring radioactivity. This is proposed to remove an anomaly in the legislation because their use presents no radiation danger to the health of workers or members of the public, nor is there anything reasonably practicable that the oil and gas industry can do to reduce the levels of radioactivity.
