Towards a National Ambient Noise Strategy

This consultation closed in March 2002. A summary of responses, and an indication of actions we intend to take subsequently, has now been published Adobe Acrobat PDF file (230kb). Two News Releases have also been issued (12 December 2002) - "Tackling background noise from transport and industry" and "England noise mapping starts in London"

Further information is available on our Help page about downloading or reading Adobe Acrobat PDF documents.

The following material has been left in place for reference/archive purposes.

The Government announced in the Rural White Paper (November 2000) its intention to consult on a proposed national ambient noise strategy for England.

We are seeking the views from the public, local authorities and interested groups to the Government's approach to the development of an ambient noise strategy in England.

Action in the rest of the UK is not considered here. England is the starting point for the strategy, while controls of ambient noise in the rest of the UK, by the responsible administrations, may be appropriate in due course.

Consultation Paper

The document has been made available in Adobe Acrobat format (270kb) for downloading.
