Defra launched a public consultation on the European Commission's proposal for an EU Directive on Environmental Liability on 12 April 2002.
The proposal aims to establish a liability regime which ensures that 'the polluter pays' for the prevention and remediation of environmental damage. The closing date for responses was 24 May 2002. The Devolved Administrations are undertaking separate consultations.
The Consultation package includes:
- a covering letter setting out the purpose of the consultation
- a summary of the proposals and comparison with existing UK arrangements, and
- a list of key questions which consultees might address.
