Existing PRO readers and HMC usersOver the next year the same level of services for visitors and readers will operate with one main change: the HMC search rooms in Chancery Lane, central London, will be transferred to Kew before the end of the financial year (March 2004). The HMC search rooms include lists of the contents of private archive collections held in local record offices, universities, and other organisations throughout the United Kingdom.Moving the HMC search rooms will mean that, besides having access to the public records at Kew, you will have information about locating and using other archives throughout the UK, all in one place. Orientation tours will show new readers how to use the new combined information sources of both PRO and HMC. If you are already have a valid readers ticket for the PRO, you will need to take no action as a result of the change (your readers ticket will stay the same and valid until it expires). Users of the HMC will need to register as readers of the National Archives when the HMC moves to Kew. |

From April 2003, the official accreditation will be as the National Archives followed by the PRO referenceThe National Archives of the UK (TNA): PRO COPY 1/515 orFor further information about the right way to credit the National Archives please visit the online catalogue at www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/Riindex.asp |

Records managers and archivistsBoth PRO and HMC already provide advice to records managers in central and local government and archivists in public and private archives on a wide range of archival issues. The combined expertise of PRO and HMC will provide a central body of advice and expertise on important archival issues, in particular, electronic records management, conservation and digital preservation. As both the PRO and HMC provide inspection services, combining these will ensure all archives whatever their size and function can benefit from an equal level of care and support. For information about how the National Archives will work with the records management and archive profession subscribe to our free newsletter at archivista@nationalarchives.gov.uk. |
