In his first week in the job, the new Secretary of State for Defence John Reid MP, in an exclusive interview during an official visit to HMS Illustrious, told Focus newspaper, the journal of the Armed Forces and the MOD, he is looking forward to his new role.

HRH Prince Andrew joined sailors from HMS Sutherland to mark VE Day in Russia. The Duke of York spoke at a ceremony in Murmansk during a parade on 8 May 2005. Following the appointment of John Reid as Secretary of State for Defence, the Prime Minister announced the names of the other new Defence Ministers on 10 May 2005.
On 8 May 2005, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London, to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of VE Day.
