Towards Freedom TV - in brief

  • Set up to give direct channels of communication to Iraqi people. Initially so that Coalition can explain its aims, actions and intentions. (Radio and leaflets first, then TV (set up in 5 days) and newspapers). The daily hour-long TV and radio news and information services gave the British Prime Minister and President of the United States their first opportunity to talk direct to the people of Iraq.
  • Setting the standard for a developing free and open media sector in Iraq involving Iraqi professionals and helping to develop infrastructure, regulatory structures and skills in Iraq. Not a long term solution: TV due to end on 9 June, Radio on 23 May.
  • We know it’s getting through and about what Iraqis want/ need it to cover: we are advised by a sounding board/ consultation group of Iraqis.
  • Service is evolving. And is starting to mobilise people. Some examples.
Explains how people should/ can get involved in political process. How Bahrain did it. Involvement of women.
Practical information. Where to get water. Security – calming people because other broadcasters are exploiting ethnic differences to incite violence. Gradually starting to give advice on health, cleanliness, medicine, entrepreneurship as the security situation stabilises.
Contributes to policy. e.g. sustains stability . It includes some ideas for the future (entrepreneurship, tourism, culture) and some more fun things to keep people off the streets (e.g. football)
  • Content structured in four sections. Freedom of Speech - voices and hopes of Iraqis; Freedom of Religion – faith and inter-faith issues; Freedom from Want - the humanitarian effort and regeneration; and Freedom from Fear - reconciliation and confidence-building issues. As well as news, public service announcements, an English and Arabic newspaper review and features, we are developing a discussion series with experts talking about developing Iraq’s prosperity, democracy,  cultural heritage, women’s participation, free press. We carry advice from doctors on health and safety (cholera, children’s immunisation, dealing with trauma), cleanliness (water supply) etc. We are developing music and sport and features on film, sport, archaeology, environment, animal welfare and education.
