What Can Other Capbadges Offer? |
Changing capbadge or trade means that you can continue your career within the Army with the advantages and security that this offers. Promotion speeds can vary widely between capbadges and even trades within a capbadge so think carefully about transferring and you could end up not only with additional skills but also a better chance of promotion. |

Internal Transfer Procedure |
The Army is expending considerable effort to encourage soldiers to continue their military careers for longer. One of the strands of this work is to encourage soldiers to transfer rather than leave. The Internal Transfer process generally takes around 2-3 months for an application to be approved following interviews. A soldier must apply for a transfer through his chain of command using Army Form 241 - Request to Transfer. Units may not delay the application form, however the actual transfer may be formally delayed in exceptional circumstances such as when the unit has been formally warned for an Operational Tour when they may request a delay to the date of transfer until after completion of the Op Tour. |

Transfers Out to Other Services |
Soldiers also have the right to apply to transfer to other services. Although classified as transfers they are actually discharged from the Army before joining the other service, although this is not recorded as a break in service for pay purposes.
Applications are submitted in the same way as described above for transfers between Corps. Soldiers are not required to be interviewed at Part 4 of the form, as the Director of Manning Army will liase direct with the other service concerned after the application has been submitted. Details of opportunities with the other Services can be found by following the following links:

How do I Transfer? |
If you would like to transfer, or just find out more about the opportunities available, speak to your RCMO, or Adjt/RAO who will advise you and possibly make arrangements for you to be attached to a unit employing the trade you wish to join. This will allow you to experience the new trade first hand. If you do decide to transfer, the RCMO or RAO will assist you in completing a form AFB 241 Request for Transfer. You will then be interviewed by your Commanding Officer and subsequently by a representative from the capbadge to which you would like to transfer. If required, he/she will be able to advise you directly about the trade, any special entry requirements and the training. After the interview the form ,with accompanying paperwork, will be sent to Colour Service Section, APC Glasgow who will action the transfer if approved. You will receive a letter giving a date for reporting either direct to your new unit or to a training establishment. Normally, you will retain your present capbadge until you have passed any training. It is important to note that your unit may not delay the processing of the application form, however the actual transfer may be formally delayed in exceptional circumstances such as when the unit has been formally warned for an Operational Tour when they may request a delay to the date of transfer until after completion of the Op Tour. For a soldier who has already given notice this is unlikely to be authorised unless you volunteer to stay for the tour.
