Chemring Painting Competition

The Chemring Painting Competition worth 500 pound sterling is open only to
serving members of the British Army, male or female, irrespective of rank.
The subject will be Active Service in 2003. Each competitor may submit up to 4 items. There is no entrance fee.

First prize in the Chemring Painting Competition will be 350 pounds sterling
with runner up prizes of 100 pounds and 50 pounds.

The competition will be held in Salisbury in November 2003 as part of the
Army Arts Society (AAS) exhibition. Distance is not a problem; soldiers
serving far from Salisbury can easily enter the competition by sending their
entries through the Royal Mail. The prizes have been generously donated by
the Chemring Group plc, a leading company in defence countermeasures.

The choice of medium, be it watercolour, acrylic, oil, pastel or so on, is up
to the competitor. In addition, work or sketches done in pencil, ink, or any
other drawing medium is acceptable. Entries will handed in during mid-

COMPETITION CATEGORIES, RULES AND ELIGIBILITY

Listed below are the categories for the 2003 Army Photographic Competition. Each category has its own eligibility and special requirements.

This year the categories are

 

 

Category 1 The Army Experience

Best single mono or colour photograph which depicts an expedition, sport or adventure training activity

Eligibility Open to all photographers (See paragraph 3)

Category 2 Today’s Army Award

Two images which represent each of the following
the military side of Army life (equipment, training, deployment etc)
the social / family aspects of Army life

Eligibility Open to all photographers (See paragraph 3)

Category 3 Best Digital Award

A single image with a military theme created using digital effects

Eligibility Open to all photographers (See paragraph 3)

Category 4 Soldier Magazine Award

The choice of the best single photograph short-listed from entries sent to soldier over the period of the competition. Can depict any aspect of Army life.  See Soldier magazine for details.

Eligibility Open to all Soldier readers. (See Soldier)

Category 5 Professional Photographer of the year

Photographers will be judged on their entries into categories 1 2 & 3. An additional 2 photographs must be submitted under each of the following themes

  • Military operations or training       
  • Military equipment.

Minimum number of images submitted 6 (maximum 8)


Eligibility Open to any full time Army or civil service photographers

Category 6 Amateur Photographer of the year

Photographers will be judged on their entries into categories 1 & 2. An additional 2 photographs must be submitted under the following themes

  • Military operations or training       
  • Military equipment

Minimum number of images submitted 5 (maximum 8)

Eligibility Open to any non-professional photographers from the Army, TA or ACF, CCF(Army) or UOTC(Army).

Category 7 Best overall Image

Best single mono or colour image from all the photographs entered into the competition.

Eligibility Open to all photographers (See paragraph 3)

Category 8 Media Partner Reader Award

This category has yet to be confirmed, pending sponsorship, and will select from all entries.

Category 9 Team Effort Award

A portfolio of a minimum of 6 images, maximum of 8, which can be a mix of colour or black and white. Images must depict each of the following themes from within that Unit.

  • Unit life       
  • Training or Operations       
  • Equipment       
  • Sport / Adventure training

Eligibility More than one photographer from each unit must contribute. Only one contributor may be a professional photographer and all contributors must be from the same unit.

Competition Rules. The Rules are as follows and supersede any previous issues:

 

 

a. Photographs must have been taken since the closing date of last year's competition ie 02 September 2000.

b. The closing date for entries is TO BE CONFIRMED. Any entries received at the competition office after this date will not be accepted. Judging will take place by the end of TO BE CONFIRMED. All entrants are invited to the prize giving, which it is anticipated, will be held at the National Army Museum, London in March. Those short listed for a prize will be required, if possible, to attend.

c. The competition is open in general is open to:

(1) All serving soldiers in the regular Army or TA and their dependants (providing that the dependants are not professional photographers).

(2) Retired or ex regular Army or TA personnel.

(3) Members of the Army Cadet Force, Combined Cadet Force (Army contingent) or University Officer Training Corps (Army contingent).

(4) Civilians working for or within the Army.d. The Soldier magazine category is open to any Soldier reader provided that they are not professional photographers. Any entrants into this category who do not meet the criteria at paragraph c, will only be eligible for the Soldier magazine award.

e. A fully completed exhibition certificate must be fixed securely to the reverse of all images entered. A blank exhibition certificate is at Annex A to this instruction.

f. Only two entries per person may be entered in the individual categories 1 and 3.

g. All entries must measure 10" on the longest side i.e. 10"x 8" or 10"x 6" with the exception of 6"x 6"negs where 8"x8" prints will be accepted. All prints must be flush mounted i.e. no borders.

h. Entries for best digital image must have an image size of 10" x 8" or 8" x 10" at 200dpi giving a file size of 9.16M. The digital image must be printed off, flush mounted and accompanied by a floppy disk or CD with the image titled with the entrant's name and be saved in JPEG high format. The digital image will be judged on image content not print quality.

i. All entries should be securely packaged and may be mailed or delivered by hand to the competition address below.

j. DCC (A) has the final say on all matters relating to the competition rules. All images become Crown Copyright on submission to the competition and DCC (A) reserves the right to arrange publication or display of the photographs without payment. In this context winners may be required to submit negatives/transparencies to DCC (A) for copying/reproduction purposes. Negatives will be returned in due course.

k. Prints cannot be returned to competitors. However all entries will be displayed at the prize giving and all competition entrants are invited. Every care will be taken with the entries but DCC (A) cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage
