International Organisations
'No national economy is now an island. And every nation state is as interdependent as it is independent. We want to build a Global Britain. A country which accepts globalisation as an opportunity to be seized, not a threat to be resisted; which is confident in its approach to international partnership; and which is comfortable that it can face the challenges of globalisation.'
The former Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, in a speech to the Trilateral Commission, 9 March 2001

The United Kingdom occupies a unique position in global affairs. It is the only state which is a member of the G8, the EU, NATO, and the Commonwealth, and is a permanent member of the Security Council. The UK is also a member of the OSCE and Council of Europe.
