About the FCO Library

*
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library holds the collections of the old Foreign Office and Colonial Office. The collection dates back to the 18th century and is particularly strong in the areas of diplomacy, colonial issues, travel and exploration. The library also holds the Foreign Office and Colonial Office lists from 1852, Colonial Office Staff Lists, country specific Colonial Reports and historical parliamentary papers.

In addition, the library houses a unique photographic record of British colonial and diplomatic history dating from the late 19th century. The photographic collection, which also includes lithographs, technical drawings, watercolours and sketches, focuses on such subjects as colonial building and architecture and native people and customs. It also includes a portrait collection of Ambassadors and High Commissioners from 1960.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the library for research. The library is open to the public Monday to Friday 10am-5pm by appointment only. Please telephone 020 7008 3925 or email library.historical@fco.gov.uk with your request so that relevant material can be made available for your visit.

The library holds photocopying and scanning facilities, for which a small charge is made.
