The Government's information initiative aims to raise public awareness of the issues concerning Britain in the European Union. The purpose of this information is to present the facts about Europe to the people.

How do I view and print these documents?

These papers are produced in the Adobe Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format) file format, which preserves the exact layout of the documents' pages as they are transmitted across the Internet. To view or print them, you will require the Adobe Acrobat reader software which may be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe website.

White Papers

On 20 March 2001, the Government presented to Parliament a Command (White) Paper containing the Treaty of Nice (PDF file, 218K).

There is also an Explanatory Memorandum to accompany the Command Paper.

The White Paper 'Developments in the European Union' is presented to Parliament every six months by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. It provides an overview of progress in key areas of European Union business taken forward during Members States' six-month tenure of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the European Council.
