The Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg, France, is an international organisation concerned with matters of democracy, education, human rights and culture. The UK was one of the founder members of the Council, which now includes countries from across the continent.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been designated by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany to be a partner organization of the Federal Foundation handling claims and paying compensation to former forced labourers under the Nazi regime. IOM will take care of claimants who are non-Jewish and who live in the UK and Ireland.

Based in Paris, the OECD is a unique forum permitting governments of the industrialised democracies to study and formulate the best policies possible in all economic and social spheres.

The OSCE is a pan-European security organization whose 55 participating States span the geographical area from Vancouver to Vladivostok. It takes a comprehensive view of security. Its bodies and institutions take a co-operative approach to a wide range of security-related issues including arms control, preventive diplomacy, confidence- and security-building measures, human rights, election monitoring and economic security.

The 54 Commonwealth member states include people of different races and origins, representing every stage of economic and social development and comprising various traditions and institutions. The special strength of this diverse association of nations lies in its shared heritage of language, culture and the rule of law which has grown out of its common historical connections. The BBC World Service is funded primarily by a grant-in-aid from FCO. It is a constituent part of the BBC and enjoys complete editorial and managerial independence, broadcasting in English and 40 other languages throughout the world. It has an estimated audience of 130 million regular listeners, excluding countries where reliable research has not been possible.

The British Chevening Scholarships, funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development (DFID), are prestigious awards which enable overseas students to study in the United Kingdom. The scholarships are offered in more than 150 countries and enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the UK and to gain skills which will benefit their countries.

The British Council promotes a wider knowledge of the United Kingdom and the English language, and encourages cultural, scientific, technological and educational co-operation with other countries. Although funded by grants-in-aid from FCO, it sets its own professional standards and devises and manages its own programmes; its priorities, objectives and output measures are set in close consultation with FCO.

British Satellite News (BSN) is a television news service, providing overseas broadcasters with news and feature packages from the British point of view on topics of international interest. BSN is produced in London by World Television on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The German-British Journalists' bursary was founded in 1995 as the third in the range of funding schemes offered by the IJP (International Journalists' Programmes). Sponsored by the Press and Information Office of the German Government in Berlin and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office London, the programme offers five British and five German journalists the opportunity to work in the other country every year.

The Foreign Press Association (FPA) is the London centre for foreign correspondents. Founded in 1888 to help foreign journalists, it now has over 500 journalists from 60 countries as members, along with 250 associate members. The Association hosts briefings, lunches and informal meetings throughout the year with well known personalities, including Members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers and other Government spokesmen, leading industrialists and City figures, writers, actors and other representatives of public life.

This site, run by the Human Rights Policy Department of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, allows visitors to search a database of the projects supported by the Foreign Office around the world, demonstrating Britain's commitment to human rights for all.

Produced by Medialink on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, LRS is used by thousands of broadcasters in more than 120 countries. LRS' clients include national public service broadcasters, large commercial networks, private stations and international broadcasters.

The British Tourist Authority (BTA) is an official body set up by Parliament in 1969. Its main functions are to increase tourism to Britain from overseas, to advise the Government and public bodies on tourism matters which affect Britain as a whole, and to encourage the provision and improvement of tourist facilities and amenities in Britain.

The Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) was established in March 1992 to provide assistance in building and strengthening pluralist democratic institutions overseas. It receives a grant-in-aid from the Government and accounts to Parliament for the resources through the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. The three main UK political parties are each represented on the Board of Governors, and are appointed by the Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs.

As part of the Home Office, the Immigration & Nationality Directorate (IND) is responsible for immigration control at air and sea ports throughout the United Kingdom. The IND also considers applications for permission to stay, citizenship and asylum. The IND website provides information on UK immigration control and what your rights and responsibilities are when you make an application.

Invest UK is the only investment agency covering the whole of the UK. It helps the world's companies to set up or expand business from a British base. Through this joint FCO-DTI operation, the British Government provides a wide range of export support to UK companies. Its aim is clear: to encourage and help potential exporters to think seriously about selling overseas and existing exporters to sell more.

The UK Online citizens portal provides access to comprehensive government information published on the Internet. The Life Episodes section offers information on common life events eg having a baby, learning to drive, and moving home, and CitizenSpace allows members of the public to take part in government consultations and discuss their views with other users.

An executive agency of the Home Office, the UK Passport Service issues and services UK passports, and issues visas for entry into British dependent territories overseas to foreign nationals and Commonwealth citizens already in the UK.

Work Permits (UK) administers the Work Permit Scheme. This service allows employers based in Great Britain to employ people who are not nationals of a European Economic Area country and are not entitled to work in this country. You can only make a work permit application if you are an employer based in Great Britain and you need to employ a person to work in England, Scotland or Wales.

Worldtrade is the DTI's Trade Policy website. It contains information and advice on Britain's international trade policy and provides a number of resources for businesses and consumers.
