PLAIN SPEAKING ON EUROPE (04/12/2001)
In a speech at the London School of Economics, Minister for Europe, Peter Hain, emphasised the importance of plain speaking about the European Union Treaties. He said that although the language of these treaties is often difficult to understand, they were agreed by all the EU governments and ‘designed to satisfy everyone; to protect everyone’s interest’. He outlined, the key principles of the Treaty of European Union, and the Treaty establishing the European Communities’ and said that the Government would be taking steps to ensure that information on Europe is widely available and easy to understand. He added that the Government supports the Treaty of Nice ‘because it will make Britain stronger and open the door for EU enlargement and a stronger, safer, richer Europe’.
BARONESS AMOS TO VISIT ETHIOPIA, 5-7 DECEMBER (04/12/2001)
Foreign Office Minister for Africa, Baroness Amos, will visit Ethiopia from 5-7 December. On 5 December, she will meet members of the Ethiopian Government. On 6-7 December, she will take part in a meeting between representatives of G8 and African countries to discuss how the G8 can support the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (formerly the New African Initiative).
CHANGE OF AMBASSADOR TO UKRAINE (04/12/2001)
Robert Brinkley has been appointed Her Majesty's Ambassador to Kiev in succession to Roland Smith who will be retiring from the Diplomatic Service. Mr Brinkley will take up his new appointment in August 2002.
