'BUILDING A BETTER, SAFER WORLD' - STATEMENT BY THE FOREIGN SECRETARY
The Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, addressed the House of Commons in a debate on the coalition against international terrorism on 16 October. He began by stressing that ‘we can expect no early conclusion to this campaign’ and outlined a strategy to ensure the elimination of terrorism by ‘a combination of military, political and humanitarian means’. The Foreign Secretary discussed bringing bin Laden to justice and said ‘it is against the USA and its people that bin Laden committed the crimes of mass murder… it is under United States law that he should be tried’. Mr Straw spoke of the support of the international community and stressed his determination not to let bin Laden succeed in turning ‘the Islamic world against the West’. A peace settlement in the Middle East is ‘more important than ever’, he said ‘we have to resolve the conflicts which terrorists exploit for their own ends’. Mr Straw concluded that the Government is not deterred by the threat of terrorists ‘because we know that we are building a better, safer world, where freedom from fear may at last become a reality for all’.
