'UNDERSTANDING THE TRUE TRADITIONS OF ISLAM' - BLAIR
In an address at the opening of Islam Awareness week at the House of Commons, the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, sent a message of good wishes read by Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott. In his address, he celebrated the contribution the Islamic faith has made to the world, saying: 'Islamic art, science and philosophy have enriched our lives in so many ways... British Muslims have contributed across the board to our politics, economic prosperity and cultural life.' Mr Blair also said it was particularly important that the recent attacks in the United States should not be attributed to Islam: 'We must not honour them with a religious justification, or a badge of faith,' he said.
'THE EU: REAL THINGS FOR REAL PEOPLE'
Minister for Europe, Peter Hain, addressed the Apeldoorn conference - an Anglo-Dutch bilateral initiative - in Edinburgh on 5 November and noted that the Dutch and British share a pragmatic approach towards Europe. 'We are both interested in how Europe can deliver real things for real people – practical benefits for the people who matter most, the citizens of Europe,' he said. In his speech, Mr Hain touched on European economic reform, the imminent introduction of the single currency in the euro zone, and the debate on the future of Europe.
'SCOTLAND AND THE EUROPEAN UNION'
Adressing business leaders at a breakfast meeting in Edinburgh on 5 November, the Minister for Europe, Peter Hain, told Scottish business men and women that they had a strong voice in Europe, and that they should make full use of it to get Europe to work for them. Giving concrete examples of benefits Scotland has already received from EU membership, he went on to highlight the practical advantages of fuller engagement with its continental partners. 'We want a Europe that works for Scotland. Which means a Scotland that works with Europe within a Britain that has more self-confidence about its engagement in Europe,' he said.
DENIS MACSHANE WELCOMES SUPPORT OF BELGRADE AUTHORITIES FOR SERB PARTICIPATION IN KOSOVO ELECTIONS
Following a decision by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) and Serbian Governments to support participation by Kosovo Serbs in elections to a Kosovo Assembly on 17 November, Denis MacShane, Foreign Office Minister, said, ‘I warmly welcome the decision by the FRY and Serbian Governments on to support Kosovo Serb voting in the Kosovo Assembly elections.'
