'REGRETTABLE BUT NECESSARY: THE MILITARY CAMPAIGN IN AFGHANISTAN'
In an article in the Observer newspaper on 18 November, the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, said that regrettable as the use of military force was in Afghanistan, there was no other way to secure peace in the country and deliver the people from oppression. Recognising that the war was not yet over, he challenged critics to suggest an alternative that would have been as effective. He pointed out that as a result of military action, many Afghans were experiencing their first taste of freedom in five years and that the way had been cleared for humanitarian efforts to begin. 'Engaging with global problems is both a moral duty and a practical imperative. But the real test of our commitment is not our words but our deeds,’ he said.
