PRIME MINISTER'S INTERVIEW WITH THE OBSERVER
In an interview with The Observer published on 14 October, Prime Minister Tony Blair said that the international coalition against terrorism remained strong, as did the universal consensus that those responsible for the 11 September atrocities in the US should be brought to account. Mr Blair said that Usama bin Laden is exploiting the 'vacuum' created by the breakdown of the Middle East peace process in order to breed more violence between the two parties. It is imperative not to allow a vacuum, Mr Blair said, and the peace process must be reinvigorated. Asked about the prospect of a 'wider war' against other countries who harbour terrorists, Mr Blair responded that shutting down the terrorist network operating out of Afghanistan is the sole focus of the present campaign; the second phase - namely against international terrorism in all its forms - remains to be discussed 'with our allies including our partners in the Arab world.'
