LIBERIA: BRIAN WILSON WELCOMES UN SANCTIONS
FCO Minister of State, Brian Wilson, has welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 1343 imposing mandatory UN sanctions in relation to Liberia. He said, 'The resolution can leave President Taylor and his associates in no doubt that the international community will no longer tolerate his destabilising activities in the region'. The new measures include an arms export embargo, a ban on diamond imports, and a travel ban on senior members of Liberian military.

UK/AUSTRIA ROUNDTABLE: PROSPECTS FOR ENLARGEMENT
Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, and Austrian Foreign Minister, Dr Benita Ferrero-Waldner, gave the opening speeches at the UK/Austria roundtable on EU enlargement on 8 March. In the discussions that followed, business leaders, academics and politicians talked about ways of getting the message across to the public on the opportunities for employment and business as well as the challenges arising from EU enlargement.

SOUTH GEORGIA: BRITISH ANTARCTIC SURVEY TO OPEN NEW STATION
The British Antarctic Survey will inaugurate a new station at King Edward Point, South Georgia on 22 March. FCO Minister of State, John Battle, said the new station would 'enable BAS personnel on the island to conduct an enhanced programme of scientific and environmental research'.
