Young Person's Guarantee kicks off

  • Published: Monday, 25 January 2010

From today every young person who is unemployed for six months will be offered a job, training or work experience through the Young Person’s Guarantee. This will be backed by up to 470,000 opportunities for young people over the next 15 months.

Young Person's Guarantee: helping young people into work

Up to 100,000 jobseekers aged 18 – 24 can benefit from the guarantee straight away.

Young Person’s Guarantee

The doors opened to young people by the Young Person’s Guarantee are:

  • the option to apply for new jobs created through the Future Jobs Fund (FJF)
  • support to apply for an existing job in a key employment sector
  • work-focused training
  • a place on a Community Task Force
  • help with self-employment
  • internships for graduates and non-graduates

The new Young Person’s Guarantee will provide up to 470,000 extra job and training opportunities for young people over the next 15 months. And under the Graduate Guarantee, graduates still not in work after six months will get access to an internship, training or help to become self-employed.

Businesses urged to help

As the Young Person’s Guarantee becomes available across the UK, ministers are calling for businesses to create even more opportunities for young people. Despite last week’s welcome drop in youth unemployment, ministers believe it’s time to increase the help as the economy recovers.

Timely and effective support for young people

Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said it’s critical to continue investing: "We want to guarantee every young person the right support. That’s why this guarantee is starting now, as the school leavers and graduates of last summer who couldn’t find work because of the recession start to approach six months unemployment."

She also confirmed that as part of the guarantee each young person will be given a named Jobcentre Plus Personal Adviser. This continuity of support can help young people build effective relationships with their advisers.
