This page provides latest information for Overseas Visitor managers on the new arrangements by which NHS Trusts should record and report treatments (including planned treatments) of visitors from the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.
A letter to Overseas Visitor Managers outlining the new arrangements is attached.
Overseas Visitor managers should use the Overseas Visitor Treatment (OVT) portal to report treatments of visitors (including planned treatment) from the EEA and Switzerland.
This collection has been approved by the Review of Central Returns Steering Committee - ROCR
When uploading forms from a file on the OVT portal, you may need to use country postcodes (sometimes referred to as ZZ codes) rather than names.
Some patient administration systems store and produce these codes automatically, but others do not. The table in the attached document presents a list of EEA member states and the associated country postcode.
Please see attached link which will take you to an external web page showing all EEA European Health Insurance Cards and how to recognise them.
Those visitors receiving clinically necessary treatment who fail to provide an EHIC, should be asked to obtain a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) from the appropriate liaison body in the competent member state. A PRC provides the same access to free treatment as if it was an EHIC. PRC details should also be recorded and reported for a claim to be made.
Overseas Visitor managers may find the attached map of EEA Member States helpful when determining whether an Overseas Visitor requires a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
NHS Overseas Visitor managers can now download the attached posters for their use.
Download leaflets on the EHIC, healthcare entitlement for EEA and non-EEA visitors and hospital treatment for non-resident UK citizens.
Overseas visitor managers need to know their Host PCT to register. The attached document will assist trusts in identifying their host PCT. NHS Trusts who treat patients from the EEA and Switzerland will continue to invoice their Host PCT.
