The Prime Minister has today appointed Dr Douglas Gurr, Sir Martin Rees Kt, and Sir William Wells Kt as Trustees of the National Museum of Science and Industry for a period of four years.
Biographical Notes
Dr Douglas Gurr is the founder and Chief Executive of Blue Heath Direct Ltd, a leading commercial distribution company. Prior to this he was a partner of McKinsey and Company (1995-2001) a leading strategy consulting firm, specialising in retail projects, including corporate and business unit strategy, and in pro-bono work, through which he was involved in a major strategic review of the NMSI’s operations across the organisation. Between 1992 and 1995 he was a Civil Servant at the Department of Transport, and has also been a lecturer in maths and computer science at the University of Aarhus, Denmark.
Dr Gurr holds no other public appointments and has not been involved in any political activity in the last five years.
Sir Martin Rees is a Royal Society Research Professor and a fellow of King’s College at the University of Cambridge. He holds the honorary title of Astronomer Royal, and also Visiting Professor at Imperial College London and at Leicester University. He is a foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (1994-95) and the Royal Astronomical Society (1992-04), and Trustee of the British Museum (1996-2002) and of NESTA 1998-2001. He is currently a Trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (since 1998), the Kennedy Memorial Trust (since 1999), and the Institute for Public Policy Research (since 2001).
Sir Martin has not been involved in any political activity in the last five years.
Sir William Wells is President of Chesterton International plc, a commercial property company, since 1998, having previously been a partner and then its Chairman, and is Chairman of the University of Surrey. He is a non-Executive Director of a number of other companies, including Excel, AMP (UK) plc and Holdings; National Provident Life Ltd. He holds a number of other appointments in the public sector, including Chairman of the NHS Appointments Commission since 2001, and Hon Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians since 2002.
Sir William has not been involved in any political activity in the last five years.

The National Museum of Science & Industry incorporates the Science Museum in London, the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, the National Railway Museum in York and the Wroughton outstation in Wiltshire. The Museum’s aim is to promote the public understanding of the history and contemporary practice of science, medicine, technology and industry. Trustees are not remunerated.
