Description: Handmade cream-coloured silk baby's dress with gold embroidery. - Handmade cream coloured silk baby's dress with gold embroidery. It is one of a number of baby clothes brought by the donor's mother in 1935 from Baghdad to New York, where the donor was expecting her first child. The clothes were made in the early 1930s by girls at the Laura Kadoorie Girls' School in Baghdad and are typical of their time. They vividly illustrate the importance traditionally placed upon embroidery skills for girls within the Baghdadi Jewish community together with the western influences and aspirations that were widespread amongst it by the 1930s. Their journey from Baghdad to New York reflects the large diaspora of Baghdadi Jews which had begun in the early 18th century as merchants left Baghdad, partly to avoid persecution, for new opportunities abroad.
