Tea pickers

Catalogue Reference:(BL) Photo 440/1(1)

This photograph dated to 1909 reveals something of the hardships undergone by tea pickers working on a plantation in India. Not only the women but also their young children are hard at work. Conditions on the tea plantations varied considerably but very low wages and poor housing conditions were the experience of many.
