The river Vistula at Cracow in Poland from The Alien Immigrant published in 1903 with the royal castle and cathedral (where Polish monarchs were crowned) rising up behind. The picture shows part of the city walls which were built between the 13th and 15th centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century the Jewish community numbered about 25,000 and from the early 15th century it had been a centre of learning attracting emminent scholars.
