About Defence

Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Munitions and Search School (DEMSS)

DEMSS is a 'battle' school with a worldwide reputation for excellence. It delivers Explosives, Munitions, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Search training in order to support national Defence Capability.

Although a single School, it is geographically divided between Kineton in Warwickshire and Lodge Hill in Kent.

DEMSS Kineton is in Warwickshire and comprises the Munitions Wing and IEDD Wing delivering munitions management training and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) training respectively.

Lodge Hill is the home of DEMSS South and training in Conventional Munitions Disposal (CMD) and Search is carried out there. Biological and Chemical Munitions Disposal (BCMD) is also taught at DEMSS.

Ammunition management training is principally a logistic function and includes EOD training (as an operational function) and so DEMSS forms part of the DCLPA (Defence College of Logistics and Personnel Administration).

CMD, BCMD and IEDD are all aspects of EOD, whilst Search - very much an operationally focused discipline - has always been related to IEDD at the higher levels, hence its inclusion in DEMSS. The various disciplines have been grouped together because they teach related skills and subjects, although proponents of each speciality boast their own estimable and proud history.

DEMSS produces highly trained, premium quality servicemen and women, who deploy on operations immediately, or soon after completing their course. Some work in munitions management, supporting operations worldwide, ensuring that our munitions are serviceable, safe and managed properly, whilst others carry out EOD or counter terrorist search operations in the most dangerous of environments imaginable.

The Search Wing at DEMSS South is unique in that also conducts advanced Search training for the civil police through a partnership with the National Police Improvements Agency (NPIA): its police officers are responsible for training all British Constabularies in Search. Their students deploy onto our streets daily in the fight against wider crime as well as terrorism.

DEMSS offers a number of courses to NATO, Commonwealth and Foreign students. The courses available can be found under Related links.

DEMSS is charged with rationalisation of EOD and Search Training. As part of this rationalisation plans are in place to bring the two geographically dispersed sites closer together. DEMSS South will therefore move to Bicester, as DEMSS Bicester, in 2012 as part of a £1.3Bn PPP. This new site will bring new and exciting training opportunities and, being only 30 miles from Kineton, will enable closer and more integrated training across all disciplines taught at DEMSS.
