Welcome to the thirtieth edition of the Highways Agency's monthly ITS Newswire service. The Newswire combines the news services of the previous ITS Radar and EU Watch projects into one package: ITS Radar International. Instead of the usual news service, this is a special edition, linking to the report of our recent subscriber survey and breaking news from the European Commission.
ITS Radar International provides 'ITS Intelligence' for the Highways Agency on developments in Europe and around the world. It summarises key information regarding innovative pilot projects worldwide and emerging ITS technologies, European ITS Research and Policy, and identifies opportunities for the Highways Agency to become more involved in ITS developments in Europe. The project web sites can now be reached through a page on the Highways Agency web site through the following link: http://www.highways.gov.uk/itsradar.
The ITS Radar International team would like to wish everyone a happy Winter break. The next Newswire will be issued in early February. We are planning a number of improvements and deliverables next year, the first of which will be a concise summary report of the recent ITS World Congress which was held in New York.
On Tuesday (16th December), the European Commission released an Action
Plan for the deployment of ITS in road transport. The plan suggests a number
of targeted measures and a Proposal
for a Directive laying down the framework for their implementation. ITS can
significantly contribute to a cleaner, safer and more efficient transport
system. The goal is to create the momentum necessary to speed up market
penetration of mature ITS applications and services in Europe.
Further
information can be found in the Europa
press release and the European
Commission Transport web site.
