Putting the Fronline First HM Government

Liam Byrne

The Government made a major step forward in the way that it operates with the publication in December 2009 of Putting the Frontline First: smarter government.

The publication set out a programme of actions to be taken across Government departments that were summarised in a forward plan. Significant progress was promised by the 2010 Budget with more to follow over the following months.  We have now published a comprehensive update setting out how we have delivered on each of the commitments in the original document.

There are three broad strands to the programme: driving up standards by strengthening the role of citizens and civic society, freeing up public services by recasting the relationship between the centre and the frontline, and streamlining the centre of government.

Our progress report is just the first step to achieving this vision, demonstrating our commitment to deliver a smarter, more responsive and more streamlined government.
