Modernising tax relief for business expenditure on cars: a technical note

08 December 2008

The Pre Budget Report confirmed that the Government will be reforming the tax relief for business expenditure on cars, and that a technical note would be published shortly after PBR.  That note is published today and includes:

Following two rounds of consultation, the Government announced at Budget 2008 its intention to reform the tax relief available for business expenditure on cars and to introduce new rules that would be simpler to administer and have an environmental focus.
This note sets out the proposed legislation, including the transitional arrangements.  In order to ensure that the final legislation is clear, concise and works as intended, the Government now welcomes views on the draft legislation.  In addition, a number of questions are asked in connection with the proposed transitional arrangements.

Comments should be received by 27 February 2009.
