Ensuring effective debt relief for poor countries: a consultation on legislation

19 February 2010

On 19 February 2010 the Government published a response to its consultation – Ensuring Effective Debt Relief for Poor Countries – and an Impact Assessment in support of the Debt Relief (Developing Countries) Bill that has been introduced as a Private Member’s Bill.

The Government has led the international community in relieving the debts of Heavily Indebted Poor Countries. Over $110bn has been delivered or committed to debt relief that helps tackle poverty in the 40 eligible countries. However, participation in debt relief is voluntary, and individual creditors seeking repayment of the full value of their debts can divert the resources provided by debt relief away from reducing poverty.

The consultation is available in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). If you do not have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer you can download the software free of charge from the Adobe website.
