Race Equality Scheme

In common with all other government departments, we are publishing a Race Equality Scheme, in accordance with the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.

Our scheme shows how we intend to fulfil our duties under Section 71 of the amended Race Relations Act 1976.

The general duty set out in Section 71 requires us (the department and its Ministers), in carrying out our functions, to have due regard to the need:

a) To eliminate unlawful racial discrimination;

b) To promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different racial groups.

Our Scheme also sets out how we intend to meet our specific duties, contained in Statutory Instrument 2001 No.3458 of the Race Relations Act (Statutory Duties) Order 2001.

It is our aim to make sure that race equality is integrated fully into the way the Treasury carries out its relevant functions in future, which include policy-making, enabling, regulating and employment practice, so our race equality scheme complements our existing corporate Diversity Action Plan.
