The Engine Shed has recalled packs of its vacuum-packed Organic Tofu that were produced with inadequate controlling factors to prevent the growth and toxin production of Clostridium botulinum. This is a food bug that may cause a serious form of food poisoning called botulism. A recall from customers is being carried out as a precautionary measure.

The FSA has issued a Product Recall Information Notice.

Product details

The following products that have use-by date between 31 March 2014 and 23 May 2014 (inclusive) are being recalled:

  • Organic Plain Tofu, 300g
  • Organic Plain Tofu, 1kg
  • Organic Smoked Tofu, 250g
  • Organic Tofu Burgers, 250g

Action taken by the company

The company has started a product recall of the affected packs. Point-of-sale notices have been produced for businesses that have been supplied with affected packs.

No other products are known to be affected.

Advice to consumers

If you bought one of the above products before Friday 25 April 2014, do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store where you bought it from. Any of the above products bought on or after Friday 25 April 2014 which have both a use-by date and a new batch code (beginning with 000001) are safe to eat as per instructions on the back of the packaging.

About product recalls and withdrawals

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.
