Nine new homes have been built in Edmonton as part of a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) domestic field trial. Instead of normal roof tiles, these houses are fitted with special tiles made from PV cells. The roofs produce between 0.96 and 2.35kW electrical power each, depending on the tiled area. In total, the homes will generate approximately 12MWh of electrical energy per year, saving about 5.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.

A supermarket in Nottingham became Tesco's first store to use solar renewable energy. The store, in the Hucknall district of the city, had 96 photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on the roof of its petrol-filling station.
The total capacity of the PV system is 15kW. It will generate 12.5MWh of electricity a year – 20 per cent of the energy required for the petrol station. The 3,500 customers who use the store every day will be able to see a display meter showing how much energy is generated and used.
