PROJECTS RECEIVING FUNDING


Action for Business (Bradford) Limited (ABL) is a community enterprise based in the heart of the Manningham district of Bradford  

As part of the DTI’s initiative of awareness raising of the Employment Equality Regulations 2003, ABL is hosting an event in Bradford next January. This free event – open to everyone - is designed to highlight the key points of the Regulations on religion, belief, and sexual orientation.

Barnsley Disability Employment Consortium (BDEC) is a Strategic Development Partnership (SDP) of voluntary and community sector organisations working to assist disabled people from welfare into work.  Their approach to equality recognises that there are attitude and access issues that prevent the employment of disabled people.   

Their project involves training staff to ensure that they embed awareness of the legislation on sexual orientation and religion or belief within their organisation and those of consortium members so that their clients benefit.  In the longer term they also want to add to the Consortium’s awareness of developments on the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, helping to build their own local knowledge of equality issues.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews, the representative body of the Jewish community in Great Britain, has produced an employment booklet for Employers and Jewish Employees.  The aim of the booklet is to raise awareness of current legal requirements, and in particular the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003, in terms of employment practices for Jewish employees.  This guidance aims to help both employers and employees to understand the particular requirements of practising Jews in the workplace.  The Board’s booklet has thus been extremely useful and in great demand.  The grant from the DTI enables the Board to pursue this project contributing to the production and dissemination of 10,000 more booklets.

Castlemilk Economic Development Agency / Castlemilk Law Centre 

CEDA Consulting is the consultancy arm of CEDA, a not-for-profit organisation working on a wide range of regeneration and inclusion projects within the West of Scotland.  CEDA Consulting has been working for over 5 years to support the ongoing development of social economy organisations.  

This project will be delivered in partnership with Castlemilk Law Centre, which was the first community Law Centre to be opened in Scotland in 1978.  

This is a new project, which will deliver 12 seminars at locations throughout Strathclyde Region.  The seminars will cover details of the new legislation, delivered by legal staff at Castlemilk Law Centre and an interactive training session delivered by CEDA on ‘what this will mean to your organisation and how to imbed this within your organisation’s policies and procedures’.

Citizens Advice is receiving funding to raise awareness of the employment equality regulations that protect against discrimination in employment on the grounds of religion or belief and sexual orientation.  They will use a combination of seminars and dissemination of information materials in hardcopy form, as well as making information available on the web.  The project will raise awareness and understanding within Citizens Advice to enhance the quality of information and advice given by the organisation.

Community Access Group Midlands (CAGM) is a registered charity operating within England and Wales. Their main aims and objectives are to help Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities access the facilities and conduct activities that further their development and improve their quality of life.

As part of the awareness raising strategy, CAGM will be working with its partners the Derby Law Centre and Coventry Law Centre to disseminate information to the Black and minority Ethnic community within the East Midlands. The information will take the form of a leaflet and poster translated into the languages of the target group. Together with this, a set of informal awareness sessions will be held to build capacity, raise the awareness of this legislation, and promote the work of their partners.

Diversiton - Funding support from the DTI will enable Diversiton to develop additional information and training materials on religion and belief issues for employers and individuals. The Diversiton website which was developed in 2003/04 with the support of the DTI will be enhanced with new web based resources. A range of partnership initiatives is also in development.

Dudley REC is being funded to make particular use of its links with the Chamber of Commerce and trade associations to embed awareness of the equality legislation with these key stakeholders.  This approach has the potential to contribute to the development of local knowledge networks on equality issues that will benefit the Commission for Equality and Human Rights.

Ealing Racial Equality Council will be using links to their local community in Ealing, Hounslow and Hillingdon, to educate and inform individuals and employees of their rights and responsibilities under the new Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations.  

Ealing REC will be disseminating existing materials on the Regulations and providing signposting to sources of more in-depth information. They will be working with another project in the area Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara to maximise the reach of their activity.

Equality North East is a not for profit company whose aim is to remove the barriers to equality in the workplace. In order to achieve their aims they deliver various initiatives including their website.  

This website is aimed at small businesses and individuals informing them of their rights and responsibilities pertaining to equality in the workplace. The website provides a comprehensive source of equality information including, legislation, news, best practice and a job page.

Faith Regen UK is a multi faith regeneration agency, working with the government, faith institutions and the housing sector to provide enabling services to empower disadvantaged communities. Faithworks is a specialist infrastructure organisation that provides support to local faith groups within the Christian faith tradition. In the past year they have worked on various ways of helping local groups understand their responsibilities under the employment equality regulations legislation.  

In collaboration with infrastructure organisations from the other major religions in the UK, they are working on an employment manual, which gives information on compliance, and best practice that takes account of the needs of religious organisations and how the legislation applies to them.

Galop and PACE

The Highlands and Islands Equality Forum (HIEF) team are delivering a series of twenty-five road shows from November 2004 through to March 2005 across the length and breadth of the area. These awareness raising presentations address current Equality legislation, promote the business case benefits of banishing discrimination, and supply attendees with a complete ‘DIY Equality Toolkit’ to help them put in place a living plan that meets their responsibilities under law.

Kairos in Soho (KiS) is a community organisation and registered charity based in Soho that supports the health and well being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. 

KiS will disseminate existing materials on the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation and Religion or Belief) Regulations and provide signposting to sources of more in-depth information. KiS will be working in partnership with the local community involving voluntary and community groups, statutory services, the police, faith communities and the commercial sector.

London Voluntary Service Council offers expert support and advice on all employment issues including those related to equality, to voluntary sector employers in London. Muslim Council of Britain will be raising awareness and understanding within the Muslim Community, with employers and advisory organisations about the provisions of the Employment Equality (Religion of Belief) Regulations. This is being done through a variety of means including: briefing of Imams to help spread the message to the Muslim Community through mosques –and during key religious festivals such as Ramadan; good practice guidance for mainstream agencies and large employers on Muslim issues and cultural awareness; enhancement of the MCB website to include employment FAQs; working with advisory organisations so they have a better understanding of the employment equality regulations and the Muslim faith.

National Association of Councils for Voluntary Service (NACVS)

The National Association of Councils for Voluntary Service is the growing network of over 350 local infrastructure organisations (LIOs – often known as Councils for Voluntary Service or CVS) throughout England. NACVS helps to promote voluntary and community action by supporting its member organisations, by acting as a national voice for the local voluntary and community sector and, by drawing on the experience of LIOs, contributing to the development of national policy.  NACVS is working on an awareness raising tool which will provide guidance/case studies in improving CVS and other 2nd tier support organisation’s practice in diversity issues, including those relating to the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation and Religion or Belief) Regulations.

Is awareness raising in the voluntary and community sector for both sets of Regulations.  It is producing awareness raising materials, signposting to other sources of information such as Acas and disseminating information at events focusing on equality, as part of good employment practice.

Paddington Development Trust will be using links to their local community to produce and disseminate awareness raising materials on the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation and Religion or Belief) Regulations in Arabic. The Paddington Development trust works with Muslims, Arabic Speakers and Refugees in their local area, groups that are often hard to reach when raising awareness of new legislation. The Trust will disseminate existing materials on the Regulations and provide signposting to sources of more in-depth information.

Racial Equality Councils' project managed by British Federation of Racial Equality Councils (BFoREC) Project members are producing awareness raising materials, that will be disseminated at a series of regional events for REC staff and key stakeholders.  The events are intended to develop the REC movement's awareness of the Employment Equality Regulations, their impact in the workplace on employees and employers and how their advisors might deal with these issues when the arise.  A website will also be created by the project to share examples of good practice with the site's visitors.

Stonewall will be producing a second updated edition of its widely-praised Employer's Guide to the new Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 which includes a best practice toolkit.  They will also be publishing and disseminating a new edition of their 'straight-talking' pocket-sized guidelines for employees, which has proved to be very popular and helpful for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees.

Tameside Racial Equality Council works in cross-sector partnerships and engagements to ensure that communities in their local area can live together. Workers Educational Association (WEA) is the largest voluntary provider of Adult Education in England and Scotland.  The WEA is being funded to develop awareness and understanding of both sets of regulations within its organisation through guidance and training. 

They will use their new skills and expertise to run training for employers and employees of small and medium size enterprises and community organisations within existing work with community and workplace learning and with new organisations within their widening participation strategy.
