EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY

The Employment Equality Regulations 2003

We have outlined some of the key features of the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 (which came into force on 1 December 2003) and the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 which came into force on 2 December 2003. It covers some key questions:

Acas has produced practical workplace guidance, for the employer and the employee, which is available on their website.

Acas operates a telephone helpline (tel: 08457 47 47 47, textphone: 08456 06 16 00) which provides information and advice across a wide range of employment issues. It also runs an advice line for employers (Equality Direct tel: 0845 600 3444, textphone: 08456 06 16 00) offering good practice guidance on fairness in the workplace.

If you want to read the text of the Regulations, click on the links below:

The link below is for those who want a more detailed explanation of the contents of the Regulations. It is a 55 page document in pdf format and we do not recommend that you print it. More general information is available on these pages.

The Employment Equality (Amendment) Regulations 2003

The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) (Amendment) Regulations 2003 and Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) (Amendment) Regulations 2003 amend the principal Regulations. They fulfil our earlier commitment to outlaw discrimination in the way that pension schemes are administered. It was not possible to include them in the summer when we laid the principal regulations before Parliament as the Department for Work and Pensions were carrying out a review on pensions at the time and we wanted to maintain our commitment to a joined up approach in implementing the Employment and Race Directives.

The links below are to the full Regulatory Impact Assessments for the two sets of amending Regulations:
