Science and Engineering Profession

This section aims to provide information and resources that will help you make decisions about your career

The large and diverse nature of the civil service scientific and engineering community means that the information provided here is necessarily high‑level and generic in nature. It should be supplemented by more detailed careers information available within your local organisation.

Whilst the HoSEP Team welcomes comments on these pages, we regret that we are unable to offer individual careers advice.

Professional Skills for Government

Professional Skills for Government (PSG) is an important part of the government's reform agenda. It describes the skills that civil servants need to deliver services in the modern environment and illustrates how these can be achieved and demonstrated. General information on PSG may be found on the relevant section of the Cabinet Office website. More specific information for scientists and engineers is available on the Careers - PSG page of this web site.

Careers Framework

The careers framework may prove useful when thinking about a career within the civil service scientific and engineering community. It includes a list of example jobs, which are used to clarify particular features of the framework, although they may be of interest in their own right.

Careers Resources

This page provides links to a number of on‑line resources that may help you achieve your career aims. Some of these resources are explicitly focused on the government scientific and engineering community, whilst others are more widely applicable.
