Head Of Profession

Professor John Beddington acts as the Head Of Profession for scientists and engineers within the Civil Service. He is supported in this role by the Head of Science and Engineering Profession (HoSEP) Team, which is located in the Government Office for Science

The HoSEP Team works across government to build, support and champion the civil service science and engineering community. The team fulfils this role by targeting actions at three different areas:

Central Government

  • To act as a single point of contact for departmental and civil service wide views on the profession
  • To provide the relevant professional input to the Professional Skills for Government (PSG) initiative.

      • To lead in the networking forum and exchange of ideas and best practice
      • To offer advice and support on key issues and facilitate high level engagement with central government on cross department issues
      • To champion the cause of the profession
      • To assist in providing clearer guidance on career paths, in particular routes into the Senior Civil Service
      • To improve access to learning and development opportunities
      • To enhance interchange and secondment opportunities
      • To widen networking opportunities, particularly across government departments
